Protagonist

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The J. Bookwalter Protagonist is an exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon hailing from the esteemed Columbia Valley. This wine exudes a rich, full-bodied nature that warmly envelops the palate. The vivid, deep crimson color hints at its complexity and intensity. One is immediately struck by the prominent fruit-forward notes of blackcurrant and dark plum, interlaced with subtle hints of vanilla and oak, courtesy of meticulous aging in fine barrels. The acidity is bright and lively, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the robust structure and well-integrated, firm tannins. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression of ripe fruits and gentle spice. J. Bookwalter Protagonist is a commendable representation of Columbia Valley’s winemaking prowess, embodying both the rich terroir and the refined craftsmanship of this renowned winegrowing region.

Columbia Valley

Sheltered by the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, Columbia Valley is home to the majority of Washington's vineyards. Cool nights keep zippy acidity in the grapes, while long daylight hours give the fruit plenty of chance to ripen. This results in full-bodied Merlot, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and deeply concentrated Syrah. White wines are just as tantalizing, with toasty oak-touched Chardonnay and ripe stone fruit-flavored Riesling taking the spotlight. Sub-AVAs to look out for are Yakima Valley and Walla Walla. The Columbia Valley is one of the only appellations in the United States to occupy vineyards in two states, as it crosses the Oregon border in the southern part of the valley.
