Established during the Gold Rush in California's Sierra Foothills, El Dorado is a treasure trove for wine lovers. Grapes grow at high altitudes on steep hillsides, where cool temperatures combine with optimum sun exposure to ensure the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Many different grapes thrive here, from sun-loving Syrah to crisp, aromatic Riesling. But it is often the area's zippy, full-bodied Zinfandels that take the spotlight. Some of the best come from the smaller Fair Play AVA, also known for its experimental blends of Southern French and Italian varietals.
