Michigan is an increasingly recognized winegrowing region nestled in the heart of the Great Lakes area. With its diverse terrain stretching from the shores of its majestic lakes to the gentle slopes of its inland hills, Michigan's American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) offer a rich tapestry of terroir. The surrounding Great Lakes create a unique microclimate by providing a buffer against extreme seasonal temperatures, which moderates the vineyard climates. This natural air conditioning, coupled with lake-effect snow in winter, protects the dormant vines, while the cool air helps to slow grape ripening during the growing season. Vineyards closer to the lakes benefit from the cooler climate, perfect for Riesling and Pinot Noir, while the slightly warmer inland areas favor the cultivation of robust, full-flavored varieties like Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
