One of the most historic wine-producing countries, Greece is a cradle of modern wine culture. While today its wines do not enjoy the same reputation as some of its other European neighbors, Greece and its unique indigenous grape varieties are enjoying a Renaissance. White wine drinkers will love the floral Debina and peachy Malagousia from the cooler, wetter north of the country. Or head down to the sun-kissed Aegean islands for spellbinding Assyrtiko, with flavors ranging from passionfruit and mineral to oak and pineapple. For red wine lovers, southern Greece grows the herbaceous Agiorgitiko, while the sublime Xinomavro of the north—often referred to as "Greece's Barolo"—offers dark cherry and licorice notes.
