The cool waters of the Chesapeake Bay play a major role in moderating Maryland's vineyards, sending breezes and chilly air inland. This tempers the daytime heat and allows grapes to ripen slowly but fully. Cooler-climate grape varieties thrive closest to the bay, while further inland, bigger, bolder wines prevail.
