Kalema

2013 Salento Primitivo

The 2013 Fabiana Kalema is a captivating Primitivo from the picturesque Salento region, renowned for producing deeply colored and expressive red wines. This medium-bodied beauty showcases a delightful balance of flavors, with an inviting profile that features ripe blackberries and cherries, underscored by hints of spice and gentle earthy undertones. The acidity is bright and refreshing, enhancing the wine's overall vibrancy, while the tannins are medium, providing a soft yet structured mouthfeel. As a dry red, it presents a delightful complexity that invites exploration, making it a perfect companion for hearty dishes or a cozy evening by the fireplace.

Puglia
Puglia

The heel of Italy's "boot," sunny Puglia (the "g" is silent), is famed for its olive oils, almonds and of course, its rich, full-bodied wines. Although dry and intensely hot in the summer, Puglia has coastlines on three sides, providing cool Mediterranean breezes to alleviate the daytime heat. Primitivo (known in the US as Zinfandel) does well here, with other popular red varieties including Sangiovese and Negroamaro. But it is not all about reds in Puglia: the local Fiano grape produces gloriously nutty, tropical-flavored white, while Falanghina makes intensely fruity wines with citrus blossom notes.
