The state's American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) benefit from a variety of climates and terrains, greatly influenced by the proximity to large bodies of water like the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. These waters help to temper the climate, reducing temperature extremes during the growing season. This allows for a prolonged ripening period, enabling grapes to develop balanced flavors and acidity. Vineyards closest to the water thrive on cooler-climate varietals, producing refined and elegant wines, while the warmer inland areas are known for more robust and expressive varieties.
