Chianti

Sprawling between the Tuscan cities of Siena and Florence, Chianti is probably the most famous of Italy's wine regions. Its dry, tangy red wines have been produced in the area since at least the 13th century. In the 18th century, Chianti was one of the first wine regions to be officially demarcated. Enjoying a classic continental climate, grapevines thrive in Tuscany's hot, dry summer days and mild evening temperatures. The main grape of Chianti is the Italian superstar Sangiovese, which typically expresses flavors of red cherry and espresso. Some wines also feature notes of oregano, roasted tomato and balsamic vinegar, giving Chianti its adage, "Italy in a glass."
