Chalk Hill

This sub-AVA in Sonoma's Russian River Valley sits on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Range. While the daily Pacific fogs that characterize the Russian River also blow through Chalk Hill, its wines differ. This is partly due to the ashy, quartzite-rich volcanic soils that give the region its name, and partly due to the slightly warmer climate. With vineyards planted on the valley floor as well as the soaring slopes, local winemakers have had success with a range of red and white grapes. Look out for intense Bordeaux blends, crisp Sauvignon Blanc and bold Sangiovese "Cal Italians."
