Aglianico

2008 Puglia Aglianico

Antica Enotria Aglianico from the 2008 vintage is a remarkable red wine hailing from the sun-drenched region of Puglia. This wine showcases a full-bodied profile that is both generous and robust, making it a delightful companion for hearty dishes. The acidity is bright and refreshing, lending a lively character that balances the wine's richness beautifully. Its tannins are firm yet well-integrated, contributing to a sturdy structure that promises aging potential. The fruit intensity is prominent, offering layers of dark cherry, plum, and hints of dark chocolate, while subtle earthy notes add complexity. This Aglianico is dry, making it an excellent choice for those who appreciate a wine that highlights the depth and nuance of this celebrated varietal from Italy.

The heel of Italy's "boot," sunny Puglia (the "g" is silent), is famed for its olive oils, almonds and of course, its rich, full-bodied wines. Although dry and intensely hot in the summer, Puglia has coastlines on three sides, providing cool Mediterranean breezes to alleviate the daytime heat. Primitivo (known in the US as Zinfandel) does well here, with other popular red varieties including Sangiovese and Negroamaro. But it is not all about reds in Puglia: the local Fiano grape produces gloriously nutty, tropical-flavored white, while Falanghina makes intensely fruity wines with citrus blossom notes.
