Hungary is an under-the-radar wine destination that produces a wide variety of hugely promising wines. Hungarian wine is nothing new: progressive, quality-focused winemaking has been taking place here since the days of the Roman Empire. Set back by Soviet-era state monopoly, Hungary's winemaking is back on track and continues to evolve, combining tradition with modernity. The result? Some truly unique wines made from indigenous varietals like Kadarka, Portugieser and Kékfrankos (reds), and Furmint, Ezerjó and Hárslevelű (whites). Bull's Blood (Egri Bikavér) is Hungary's most traditionally famous red, while sumptuously sweet Tokaji is the country's best-known wine export and was once considered the gold standard for dessert wine.
