Salento Primitivo

The Icqrf/Av/4643/It 1959 Primitivo from the Salento region is truly a remarkable red wine. With its roots deeply entrenched in the sun-drenched vineyards of southern Italy, this wine exhibits a full-bodied profile that delivers an intensely rich and captivating experience. The nose is greeted with aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries, and a hint of dark plums, intertwined with subtle spicy undertones of black pepper and licorice. On the palate, its vibrant and mouthwatering acidity perfectly balances the lush fruit-forward character and structured tannins, resulting in a well-rounded and harmonious sip. The finish is complex and lingering, leaving a trail of earthy and slightly smoky notes, paying homage to the rustic terroir of Salento. Ideal for pairing with hearty barbecued meats or a rich tomato-based pasta, this Primitivo is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship synonymous with the historic vineyards of the region.

Puglia

The heel of Italy's "boot," sunny Puglia (the "g" is silent), is famed for its olive oils, almonds and of course, its rich, full-bodied wines. Although dry and intensely hot in the summer, Puglia has coastlines on three sides, providing cool Mediterranean breezes to alleviate the daytime heat. Primitivo (known in the US as Zinfandel) does well here, with other popular red varieties including Sangiovese and Negroamaro. But it is not all about reds in Puglia: the local Fiano grape produces gloriously nutty, tropical-flavored white, while Falanghina makes intensely fruity wines with citrus blossom notes.
