Santa Rita Hills has such a different climate from the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley that it became its own AVA in 2001. Sitting on the west side of Highway 101, Pacific winds blow dense fog into the narrow valley and drastically lower its temperatures. With steep, rocky slopes on either side of the river, this cool climate area is perfectly suited to producing fine Pinot Noir. You can also find stellar examples of Chardonnay and Syrah in the Santa Rita Hills. The local Santa Rita Hills Wine Alliance throws a three-day festival each year to commemorate the movie "Sideways," part of which was filmed here.
