Calchas
Rattlesnake Hills, Washington
A thought-provoking blend of savory flavors and lavish textures
ABOUT THIS WINE:
Calchas
50% Cabernet – 46% Merlot – 4% Petite Sirah
Our Red Blend from Calchas is certainly not an everyday wine. With layers of rich flavor, dense textures, and complex aging characteristics, this sumptuous wine deserves a moment of contemplation. Although this is a well-known Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Sirah, tertiary characteristics dominate its flavor profile. Bright fruit fades away to reveal the nuance and seduction brought forth by oak maturation. The small region of Rattlesnake Hills is home to only a handful of wineries. Here, hardy red grape varieties take advantage of the region’s notably warm climate, ripening slowly under ample sunshine while surrounding hillsides provide protection from chilling polar winds. This results in concentrated wines that make ideal candidates for extended aging. Our blend is an extraordinary example of this styling and is well-worthy of a special occasion or m ...

WINE REGION:
Rattlesnake Hills
A small sub-region in the north of Yakima Valley, Rattlesnake Hills is a relatively new AVA. It has gained recognition for its finely balanced Riesling and Chardonnay and its structured Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The key is its hilly topography, with vineyards sitting at average elevations of 850 feet. The vines here enjoy better sun exposure and improved airflow than those in the valley below, helping the grapes stay healthy through the long growing season. With broad day and night temperature variations, wines from Rattlesnake Hills are increasingly in demand for their elegance.

ABOUT THE BRAND:
Calchas
Calchas is an ancient name from Greek mythology with the etymological meaning of "the dark one." This is best interpreted as having a sense of pondering. Calchas, who was also portrayed as a skilled augur, was able to see the future by watching the behavior of birds and hence the skies. This is quite a fitting name for our opulent reds from Washington's premier wine regions. These thought-provoking wines demand a moment of reflection to appreciate each layer of nuance and depth.
